Description
Norton House is a house from the 17th century that was extensively rebuilt in 1912. The original part is made of blue lias stone, while the rear extensions are constructed from Cotswold stone. The building features a slate roof with a stone stack at the west end, two ridge stacks, and a modern stack at the east end. It is two stories high with an attic.
The south front has renewed stone mullion windows, including four 3-light windows and one 2-light window above, and three 4-light windows and two 2-light windows below, along with two modern doors. The east end section is a modern addition. The west gable end retains original windows with hoodmoulds, including a single light in the attic and a 2-light window on the first floor. There is evidence that the south front was raised in the 17th century at the gable end.
At the rear, there is a parallel west gable featuring an altered late 18th-century red brick range, which includes a 17th-century hoodmoulded 2-light window at the first floor of the gable. The rear was built out in 1912, with the roof sloping down to an 8-light passage window, two hipped dormers above, and two-storey gables on each side with stone mullion windows. A stone doorcase is located at the angle, and the rear roof is covered with plain tiles.
Inside, there are substantial original main beams and timber-framing in the party wall and the upper part of the rear wall.
