Description
The Court is a gatehouse, later converted into a house, dating to circa 1600. It was restored and extended in 1898 by Guy Dawber. The building is constructed of limestone rubble with a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high. Windows are rebated and chamfered with mullions.
The original section facing the road has two windows of two lights on the ground floor, and a similar window towards the left on the first floor, partly within a gable. To the right is a five-light window with a transom, also within a gable. A wide entrance, originally arched with a moulded segmental arch within a square label and moulded imposts, is now blocked. Carved beneath the label are three crests: a reindeer, a sheldrake and a mailed fist. Above the arch is a carved coat of arms of Sheldon crossed with Rudding. The blocked arch contains a smaller doorway with leaded glazing within a grid of timber mullions and transoms. Gable ends are coped, and the chimney to the right has paired shafts.
The south facade features a recessed two-bay centre between two gabled wings, each of one bay; the right-hand wing is part of the original gatehouse. A chamfered doorway is located in the right-hand bay of the centre.
The earlier part of the house was originally the gatehouse and entrance to the stables of Broadway Court, which stood in the field opposite and was demolished in 1773.
