Description
Morton Hall is a small country house built in the early 18th century, with alterations made in the early 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of brick and sandstone ashlar, topped with a slate roof and features lateral brick stacks. The east front has three storeys, a stone-coped parapet, a moulded stone cornice, and sill bands on the first and second floors. The ground floor is made of ashlar and also has a sill band. The building has chamfered quoins and five windows, which are early 19th-century sashes with 12 panes that have unusual horizontal rectangular proportions and rubbed brick heads. The ground floor windows have wedge lintels, and there is a central entrance with a portico supported by two pairs of Tuscan columns and a canopy with a moulded cornice. To the left of the main block, there is an early 19th-century extension that is two storeys high, featuring a stone-coped parapet, a moulded stone cornice, chamfered quoins, and sill bands, with windows matching those of the main range. Inside, the main staircase has turned balusters, two to a tread, and a carved string. Several ground floor rooms have panelling of uncertain date, while most main rooms feature early 18th-century plaster cornices.
