Description

Dresden House is a good quality house dating from 1692. It is constructed of russet brick and features five sash windows, with the central window on the second storey having an open pediment. Moulded brick bands accentuate the first and second storeys, and stone long and short chamfered quoins define the sides. A good moulded lead rainwater head at first-floor level bears the date. The central doorway is set within a stucco surround and features plain pilasters, a moulded wooden doorcase with a radial fanlight, a five-panelled door, and a moulded wooden dentil cornice hood supported by large, elaborate wrought iron scrolled brackets rising from railings and stone steps. A moulded wooden modillion eaves cornice runs along the top, and the roof is covered in slates.

The interior retains good contemporary features, including a staircase with twisted balusters, pine and oak panelling, door casings and doors in the ground storey rooms, and an angled fireplace in the room to the left of the entrance, complete with a carved pine over-mantel. A large, two-storey wing was added in the 18th century and projects to the rear on the south side; it contains four Adam fireplaces and moulded plaster ceilings. The wing was undergoing restoration in 1976.

Dresden House forms a group with Nos. 45 to 51 (odd), the railings and lamp standards of No. 51, and Nos. 55 to 69 (odd).
