Description
The waiting room at Shrub Hill Station, now used as an office and waiting area, dates from around 1880. It features an iron frame made by the Vulcan Iron Works in Worcester, with panels of glazed ceramic tiles produced by Maw and Company, and has a concealed flat roof.
The building is a single storey with a layout of three bays, one central bay set back from the others. The bays are defined by paired columns with decorative capitals on plinths that project from a panelled dado, topped by a frieze and a modillion cornice. Each bay contains paired round-arched sash windows with moulded surrounds, and the windows in the recesses are separated by paired columns. The entrances are located in the central returns and consist of part-glazed double doors with semi-circular-arched heads, featuring Y-tracery in the glazing and lower raised and fielded panels with bolection mouldings. The ceramic tiles are richly coloured and display a variety of patterns, including a star pattern on the dado and a Greek key design on the frieze.
Historically, the Vulcan Iron Works, which manufactured railway equipment, operated from the south side of Shrub Hill Road starting in 1857 and was known as McKenzie and Holland by 1903. Originally, the two platforms and four lines of rails at Shrub Hill Station were covered by a curved roof made of wrought-iron lattice girders, glazed using the ridge-and-furrow principle; this roof was removed around 1936.
