Description
The war memorial in St Paul's churchyard was constructed in 1921 and designed by G E Sprague. It is made of limestone ashlar and timber. The memorial features a timber Calvary with a carved depiction of Christ on a cross, which is sheltered by a wooden and lead-clad weatherhood. Notably, Christ is depicted with his head raised, symbolizing the soldiers' victory, rather than the more common bowed head. The shaft of the memorial is set into a tall stone plinth that stands on a two-stepped base. The east face of the plinth is inscribed with the words: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY / OF THE MEN FROM THIS PARISH WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES FOR US IN THE GREAT WAR."
