Description

27 and 29 Barbourne Road are two semi-detached houses that have been converted into offices. They were built around 1820 and have undergone later additions and alterations, including a range added in the late 19th century on the right side. The buildings are constructed of red brick with painted stucco dressings and feature a plain-tile roof, along with a hipped slate roof on the right range. There are stacks on the main ridge and gable ends, which have oversailing details and pots. The houses are three storeys tall and have five first-floor windows arranged in a 2:3 pattern, with a two-storey, one-window range to the right.

The stucco detailing includes doorcases, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course on the main range, as well as sills, a frieze, and a cornice on the right range. The windows are primarily 8/8 sashes, except for the left first-floor window, which is 8/12, and the second-floor windows, which are 4/4. The right range features 6/6 sashes, all set in plain reveals with sills and flat gauged brick arches, except for the first-floor window on the right.

An open porch on the left side leads to an enclosed single-storey passage between the left return of the building and the south boundary wall. The porch has a semi-circular arch entrance with impost blocks, rusticated voussoirs, and a projecting keystone, along with a mutilated parapet. The entrance features a four-panel door, with the top pair glazed, a radial pattern fanlight, and sidelights. There is another entrance at the right end of the facade, which has a Tuscan-style doorcase, and the upper part of the door and fanlight are margin-glazed. The interior has not been inspected.
