Description
The War Memorial located in the churchyard of St Barnabas in Worcester is a First World War memorial cross dating from around 1920.
This monument is made of limestone and features a wheel-head cross supported by a shaft that rises from a tapered plinth, which sits on a three-stepped base. The eastern side of the cross head has a large central boss and smaller bosses at the ends of the arms, adorned with Celtic entwined foliage ornament. Below this, the tapered shaft connects to the tapered plinth, which is inscribed with the following words: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / THE GIVER OF VICTORY / AND TO THE HONOURED MEMORY / OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE."
The rear of the cross head is similarly decorated, and the rear and sides of the plinth bear the names of the fallen.
