Description

No. 7 Friar Street is a house that has been converted into a hair salon on both floors. It dates from around 1660, with later additions and alterations, including a restoration in the 1950s. The building may have been constructed for a Richard Smith. It features a timber-frame structure with rendered brick infill and a plain clay tile roof, with no visible stacks. Originally, the ground floor consisted of two rooms, but it has since been combined into one. Notably, there is no external wall to the south, as the building relies on the Greyfriars for support.

The timber-frame design includes large square panels, with two panels high on each floor. The first floor jetties out, supported by a heavily moulded bressumer beam. Console brackets support the oriel windows. The roof gablet serves as weather protection for a projecting reused beam in the central truss. The symmetrical elevation has two storeys, featuring two first-floor windows with large gables above. The windows are mullion and transom style, consisting of four lights with leaded glass and rectangular quarries. The ground floor has similar but shorter windows, and the central door is made of oak planks with chamfered cover strips.

Inside, the timber-frame was exposed during the 1950s restoration, at which time a 17th-century staircase was added.
