Description

Tanhouse Farmhouse is a tannery and farmhouse, now a house, dating from the 17th century with early 19th century and mid-20th century alterations. It is timber-framed with painted-brick infill on a sandstone and brick base, and has been refronted in roughcast brick with plain tiled roofs. The building has a U-shaped plan, consisting of two framed bays aligned north-east to south-west, featuring a large sandstone chimney and a brick stack on the south-east side. From this side, two adjoining framed bays project with a two-span roof, where the westernmost bay encloses the sandstone chimney. The structure has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar.

The framing includes four panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with short straight braces in some upper corners. The cross-wing has collar and tie-beam trusses with two collars, three struts to the lower collar, and two to the upper collar. On the south-east front elevation, the windows have eared and shouldered architraves, with two 3-light casements on both the ground and first floors, and an attic light in the right gable. The entrance, located to the left of centre, features a 19th century gabled porch (also roughcast), a pointed and chamfered archway, rectangular side lights, and a half-glazed door.

Inside, the framing is mostly intact, with stop-chamfered main ceiling beams and a large fireplace in the room to the left of the main entrance. Additionally, there is a two-bay 19th century brick addition attached to the north-west elevation. It is said that the sandstone tanning pits still survive beneath the lawn to the south-east of the house.
