Description
The barn, stable, and shelter shed located about 25 yards north-west of White House Farmhouse date back to the 17th century and have undergone later alterations. The structure is timber-framed and weatherboarded, resting on a base of brick and sandstone, with plain tiled roofs. It consists of four framed bays aligned east to west, featuring a wagon bay in the third bay from the west end, which has opposed cart entries with double doors. The building is partly two levels, but the framing is not visible from the outside.
On the south elevation, there are two upper-level 2-light windows and a door to the left of the wagon bay, along with a stable door to the right. A weathervane is positioned on the ridge between the third and fourth bays.
Inside, the barn features two and three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with short straight braces in the upper corners. The trusses consist of collar and tie-beam designs with raking struts and a V-strut in the apex at the ends, along with three intermediate tie-beam trusses and a single tier of trenched purlins.
Adjoining the west gable end is a single-bay brick addition that is slightly lower in height. The stable, which is attached to the east gable end of the barn, continues the roof ridge and is timber-framed with brick infill and some weatherboarding, also sitting on a brick and sandstone base, topped with a slate roof. It has two framed bays and two levels, featuring two stable doors, two windows, and a loft door on the south elevation. Inside, it has three panels from the sill to the wall-plate and long straight braces across the lower corners, although the trusses are not visible.
The shelter shed is located to the south-west of the barn and is timber-framed with brick infill and a half-hipped plain tiled roof. It has six framed bays, with the rear west wall displaying two rows of panels from the sill to the wall-plate. The trusses include truncated collar and tie-beam designs with struts at the ends, as well as intermediate tie-beam trusses with raking struts. The east elevation features brick infill with an inserted door and window in the south bay.
