Description
Walnut Tree Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century, with later alterations and restoration in the 1980s. It features a combination of timber-framing and brick, topped with a tile roof, and is designed in a T-plan. The building has one storey with an attic, and a two-storey cross-wing on the left side. The cross-wing is framed in four rows of square panels, with two struts between the tie-beam and collar, and V-struts above. There is one 20th-century window on each floor of the cross-wing. The right range is constructed of brick and was rebuilt in the 20th century, featuring a window with a door to its left, both having segmental heads. The attic is illuminated by a dormer, and there is a chimney on the rear wall of the main range. A truss in the rear wall of the cross-wing is dated "1676," which is believed to be a repainting of an existing date.
Inside, the main range has chamfered main beams and a rebuilt inglenook. The cross-wing is accessed through two adjacent doorways with canted heads, and there is a similar doorway in the wall that separates the two ground floor rooms of the wing. The internal truss of the cross-wing features two struts between the tie-beam and collar.
