Description

This is a pair of mid-to-late 18th century red brick houses, representing a formal refronting of an earlier 17th century building. They are located on the north side of New Street, Upton-upon-Severn. The houses are two storeys high and feature plain tile roofs, with a higher pitched roof to the right containing a small dormer window. Each house has a three-window range, with painted stone rusticated angle dressings. A high parapet is divided by stucco strips and adorned with ball finials. The modillion bracket cornice projects forward over the angle dressings and around the window bays. Each house has two two-storey splayed bays featuring exposed box sliding windows. A central first-floor window is framed by an eared architrave, with a sill course running across the side bays to No. 18; this details has been removed from No. 20. A circular attic window is set into the parapet of No. 18. The houses have fine doorcases with open pediments supported by brackets, surrounding round-headed openings with fanlights. The fanlight tracery and side panels are joined by a six-panel door on No. 18 only. A sill course runs between the ground floor bays. No. 18 is wider than No. 20.
