Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church built between 1850 and 1852 by architect J J Cole. It was rebuilt with alterations after a fire in 1876, also under Cole's direction. The church is constructed of ashlar stone and features tarred slate roofs. It is designed in a style reminiscent of the late 13th century and includes a south-west tower, a nave, north and south aisles, a south porch, a chancel, and both south and north chapels along with a vestry.

The tower has three stages, with setback buttresses and a plain broached spire. It features two single light windows in the bell chamber, a single light window in the second stage, and two-light windows in the south, which are either plain lancets or in a plain Geometrical style. The south porch is gabled and projects outward, with setback buttresses. Its outer doorway has two orders with stiff-leaf capitals and an arch decorated with clusters of fleur-de-lys.

The south and north aisles consist of five bays, although two bays of the south aisle are obscured by the tower and porch. These aisles have two-light windows in a Geometrical style, with buttresses in between. The square bell tower projects towards the west end of the north aisle. The chancel features a five-light Geometrical style east window with cusped circles above.

Inside, the church has polished circular columns with stiff-leaf capitals supporting the arcades. There is a two-bay open screen leading to the south chapel, which is adorned with cusped tracery on slender shafts. The chancel arch is double chamfered, with the inner arch resting on triple polished shafts, all featuring leaf capitals. The pulpit and pews date from the 1870s, and there is a hexagonal stone font.
