Description
South Lodge is a lodge to Madresfield Court, dating from the mid- to late 19th century and possibly designed by P C Hardwick. The building is constructed of brick with decorative timber-framing and features a tiled roof. It is a single-storey structure. The south wall has a central gabled wing that projects, featuring a four-light timber window with a transom. Above this window is a fish-bone king-post truss that extends forward, with a cove beneath the tie-beam and shaped bargeboards. The main walls display close-studding with a central band of cusped cross-bracing that forms quatrefoils. The roof is adorned with pierced ridge tiles and clay finials at each gable. A chimney with four octagonal brick shafts is located on the ridge near the junction with the wing.
On the left-hand gable wall, there is a mullioned and transomed oriel window supported by brackets. The right-hand end of the building features an open porch under the main roof, with cross-bracing beneath a rail that supports barley sugar balusters returning on the front and rear walls. The central entrance has an arched head with carved spandrels and keystones. Inside the porch, there is a three-light window with a transom and a panelled door with a moulded surround and strap hinges.
