Description

Eighteen gas street lamps

This collection comprises eighteen gas street lamps of varying designs, distributed across the town. The majority feature a tapering lantern supported on four scrolled brackets, set upon a barley twist column above a moulded, studded ring and an octagonal lower column with foliate base. The ladder rests typically have twisted arms and moulded finials. Each lamp carries a stencilled number.

The lamps fall into several distinct types. Most are either Foster and Pullen lanterns or Windsor lanterns. Several examples bear the founder's mark of Dutton and Co. of Worcester cast into the plinth, indicating their manufacture by this Worcester foundry. One lamp (number 39) bears the mark of G Evans, Piston Foundry, Worcester, and is possibly relocated. Another lamp (number 35) departs from the standard design, featuring a tapering circular column with a capital and baluster-shaped base with foliate decoration in relief, set on a circular plinth with moulded top and reeded foot, with an elaborately moulded ladder rest with scroll arms.

Two lamps (numbers 39 and 34) feature a tapering octagonal column with heavily-moulded octagonal ring, moulded base set on an octagonal plinth with chamfered and stepped stops, and an octagonal ladder rest with octagonal knop finials.

One lamp (number 44) is deficient, with one arm of the ladder rest missing.

One lamp (number 44) has an octagonal lower column that is a modern replacement.

The lamps are numbered from 32 to 49, with number 39 possibly relocated.
