Description

Little Cherkenhill is a house that likely dates back to the late medieval period, with alterations and additions from the 16th and 17th centuries, and a front wing added in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick, with a rear wing that is partly timber-framed, and features a plain-tile roof along with brick end and rear lateral stacks. It has two storeys.

The late 19th century front range has a plinth and three gables, with the central gable being lower and set back, while the right gable is positioned further back. The windows are two-light casements with top-lights, and the central window projects on brick corbels beneath a small pentice roof. There is a large central wooden glazed porch featuring a part-glazed door, carved barge boards, and a gabled plain-tile roof. To the left of the porch is a four-light window, and to the right are two two-light windows, all with cambered brick heads and brick keystones. At the center of the roof towards the rear of this wing, there is a square wooden glazed lantern topped with a plain-tile pyramidal roof and a weathervane.

The earlier rear wing has a hipped roof on the right side and features two early 19th century three-light casements on the first floor, along with additional two- and three-light casements. The square-panel timber-framing is partly visible at the rear, where there is also a large brick lateral stack and a lean-to. Inside the rear wing, there is a closed cruck truss that has been partly cut away, and a three by three bay cross-beam floor that was likely inserted in the 16th century. Further timber-framing with massive braces can be seen in the northeast gable wall, which is now internal. The property forms a group with outbuildings and a hop kiln located approximately 10 meters to the northwest.
