Description
Fall Farmhouse and the adjoining dairy, cow house, and hop kiln are structures that date back to the early 19th century, with the farmhouse likely being a remodelling of a 17th-century building and mid-20th-century alterations. The buildings are constructed from rendered brick and sandstone rubble, featuring some timber-framing and brick infill, all topped with plain tiled roofs. The farmhouse has an H-plan layout, with a central three-bay section oriented north/south, flanked by two-bay cross-wings and two large chimneys with four grouped stacks at the junction of the cross-wings. It stands two storeys high with a cellar, and the gables are adorned with moulded bargeboards and finials with pendants.
The main east elevation consists of a 1:3:1 bay arrangement, with windows that have hood moulds with returns. The central three-bay section features a small central gable, two ground floor 2-light 20th-century casements, and three first floor 2-light mullion and transom windows. The central entrance is highlighted by a 19th-century flat-roofed porch that has a 4-centred archway, a moulded cornice, and a parapet with a raised central section, leading to a 4-centred doorway. The left cross-wing gable end includes a ground floor 2-light 20th-century casement and a first floor 2-light mullion and transom window. The right cross-wing gable end has a ground floor 3-light 20th-century casement and a first floor 2-light 20th-century casement. The interior has not been inspected.
At the rear, there is a lean-to addition in the center. The dairy is attached to the right cross-wing at the rear west gable end, built of sandstone rubble with a plain tiled roof. It has two levels and two bays, with the south elevation featuring a large square-headed archway and a gabled dormer that has a pair of rectangular lights. The cow house is connected to the dairy at the west gable end, made of sandstone rubble and brick with a plain tiled roof, also two levels high, featuring a dentilled eaves cornice. The south elevation has double doors and two upper-level 2-light windows. Finally, the hop kiln is attached to the north elevation of the cow house, constructed of brick with a bituminous roof covering and a circular plan. Fall Farmhouse is part of the Winnington Estate.
