Description
The stables and adjoining shelter shed, located about 20 yards northeast of The Hyde, date back to the 16th century and were restored in the mid to late 20th century. The structure is timber-framed with rendered infill on a rubble base, and features weatherboarding at ground floor level with a plain tiled roof. It consists of four framed bays arranged in a northwest/southeast alignment and has two levels. The framing includes two rows of square panels on each level, with short straight upper corner braces. The upper level jetties out on all sides except the northeast, supported by shaped brackets. The roof features collar and tie-beam end trusses with five struts below the collar and a V-strut above, and the eaves project on shaped brackets at the gable ends.
On the main southwest elevation, there are four wood barred windows at ground floor level, along with two ledged and battened doors and two stable doors nearby. The upper floor has one window and three loft doors, with a loft door at the northwest end and a loft opening at the southeast end. Inside, the roof has three interrupted arch-braced tie-beam trusses with V-struts above the collar and two tiers of trenched purlins. Each truss has been stabilized with a full tie-beam bolted to the original frame.
The adjoining shelter shed, dating from the 19th century, is constructed of rubble and timber with corrugated iron cladding and a plain tiled roof. It has four bays and is open on the southwest side, supported by timber posts. The interior features a roof with four king-post trusses, including three intermediate trusses and one at the northwest end.
