Description

This complex of buildings includes The Swan Inn, the former 23 Dunn’s Lane, and two warehouse ranges situated between the Riverside and Dunn’s Lane. The buildings are constructed of painted brick with plain tile roofs.

The main house, facing east, is an early 18th-century building arranged in an L-shape and of two storeys with an attic. The roofs are gable ended to the north and hipped at the angle. A brick stack is located on the rear slope, and there are three gabled dormers to both the front and south sides. A wood eaves cornice is present, along with brick corbels below the eaves, possibly indicating an earlier roof line, with four to the front and two to the side. A moulded brick band runs across the front of the building between the floors. The ground floor has two 19th-century three-sided bays with tiled roofs, and a 19th-century porch between them. Above this is a four-window range with 19th-century sash windows. The side elevation has varied window openings, including three glazing bar sashes and one segment-headed window. The front door is an early example with intersecting tracery to the glazed upper half, and a hood supported by brackets.

Adjoining the house is a late 17th- to 18th-century range, formerly 23 Dunn’s Lane, also of two storeys with an attic. It has three dormers and varied fenestration, with three windows and a loading door above, and four windows and a door below. Segmental heads are present above the door and three ground-floor windows, while one ground-floor window has a glazing bar sash. A warehouse range runs north to the rear. A warehouse range to the south dates from the late 18th century, while one to the north is of the 19th century. The earlier range has a steep pitched roof with segmental arched openings and eaves loading doors with gables, and contains substantial roof trusses. The later range is gable ended and has a brick eaves cornice.

Along the Riverside is a warehouse dating from the 17th to the 18th century, of one storey and a loft. It has a gable ended roof, with the east gable canted to align with the front of the main house. The interior comprises five bays, with massive beams supporting the loft.
