Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed building located in Ripple, dating from the late 12th century to the 13th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of stone and features a nave, aisles, transepts, a crossing tower, and a chancel. The 6-bay nave, built around 1200, includes a clerestory and renewed quartrefoil piers. The east, north, and south doors have stiff leaf capitals. The west window is in the Perpendicular style. The early 13th-century crossing has keeled east and west arches adorned with stiff-leaf carving. The crossing tower was rebuilt at the top in the 15th century, with further modifications in 1713 and a balustrade added in 1797. The late 13th-century chancel features red sandstone 3-light windows with moulded rear arches and a Perpendicular east window. Inside, there are exceptional 15th-century stalls with 16 carved misericords. A tablet commemorating Hev J Holte, dated 1734, was made by Thomas White. The east window was created in 1908 by H W Bryans, while the west window was made in 1885 by C E Kempe. The church also has Jacobean communion rails.
