Description
Gilberts End Farmhouse is a 17th-century house located in Hanley Castle. It features timber-framing with brick infill and has a tiled roof, designed in an irregular L-plan. The south wing is framed in five rows of square panels and consists of two storeys with an attic. The gable truss includes struts between the tie-beam and collar. The north-west wall of this wing has two projecting chimney stacks with diagonal shafts, and between them is a brick tower topped with a hipped M-roof. This tower has two storey bands and some blocked windows with labels. The adjoining wing, which is at right angles to the south wing, appears to have two different construction phases, indicated by a break in the roof line. The exposed framing in the western range is made of thin scantling, while the eastern range is one storey with an attic and includes a lean-to addition on the north side, featuring an attic dormer above. The south side displays irregular square panels of exposed framing, with a ground floor window and a small window above a door on the left, and an attic dormer further to the right. The interior was not accessible during the survey in May 1986.
