Description

Rough Chase and the adjoining outbuilding to the west are a house and outbuilding dating from the early 18th century and 17th century, with possible earlier remains. The structure features timber-framing and brick with tile roofs. The main part of the house is faced with brick in English garden wall bond and has a hipped roof. It is two storeys high and consists of three bays. The windows are iron casements with flat heads beneath segmental outer arches. There is a door in the left-hand bay, which is sheltered by a flat timber hood, and chimneys are located to the right of the door and at the right end of the building.

To the left of the house is a lower outbuilding made of exposed timber-framing arranged in three rows of square panels. The front wall of this outbuilding features a doorway with a window to its right. The left-hand gable wall reveals a cruck truss, truncated at collar level. The rear wall of the main block displays exposed framing in irregular square panels. A rear wing appears to have been built in stages; its rear section is close-studded and includes a six-light timber mullioned window with a transom on the first floor of its gable wall. Inside the outbuilding, the two internal trusses are of the interrupted tie-beam type and likely date from the late 17th century. The cruck in the gable may be a late survival, or the building may have been reconstructed.
