Description
The Blackwell Road Railway Under Bridge is a railway under bridge and wing walls, built around 1838 to 1840 by engineer Captain William Scarth Morsom, with assistance from Herbert Spencer, for the Birmingham and Gloucester Railway Company.
Constructed from coursed picked-work local sandstone, this single-span under bridge allows Blackwell Road to pass under the Lickey Incline. It features a single horseshoe arch made of carefully built stonework, with picked-work voussoirs and keystones that rise from dressed springing stones. Above the arch, there is a string course, and a parapet wall with a projecting coved cornice, which is topped by light steel safety railings. The intrados is made of picked-work stone up to the springing line, while above this line, the tunnel portals are constructed of ashlar, with the central section made of red brick. The bridge has opposing raking wing walls on the north-west and south-east sides, with terminal piers on the north-west wing wall.
