Description

Hartley House with adjoining stable is a house dating from around 1848, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. It is constructed of brick on a sandstone base, topped with a slate roof featuring end and rear stacks. The building has a rectangular three-bay plan and is a single storey with an attic. The main east front is arranged in a 1:3:1 bay configuration; the central section projects slightly and is gabled, featuring moulded bargeboards on shaped brackets. The outer bays have sash windows inserted into the original openings, while the central part has a part-glazed door flanked by plain glass windows in their original openings. There is a trefoil opening in the stone triangle at the apex of the gable. A late 20th-century conservatory on a stone base is attached to the central gabled bay. The gable ends have attic lights. To the rear right, there is a two-bay kitchen wing with a central chimney, and adjoining its gable end is a single-bay stable with a loft above. This house is one of 40 similar Chartist houses in Dodford, built mainly on four-acre plots by the Chartist Land Company. Each smallholding was designed to provide its occupant with an independent livelihood and the chance to qualify for a county vote. This building is notable for having an attic storey and for the preservation of its rear service and outbuildings.
