Description

This is a canal accommodation bridge located about 100 meters west-southwest of Lock 58 on the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, built around 1812-1813. It is constructed of red brick in English bond, featuring sandstone coping on the parapets and sandstone responds at the arch. The bridge has a semi-elliptical arch with a plat band above and pilasters at the ends of the parapets. There are minor repairs made with blue brick on the parapet. The Worcester and Birmingham Canal was authorized in 1791, with construction starting in 1795 and completed to Tardebigge in 1807. Thomas Cartwright was the original engineer, but in 1809 he was succeeded by John Woodhouse, who initially proposed a lift instead of a flight of locks. However, after trials began in 1810, the lift was abandoned in favor of locks on the advice of Rennie. Construction on this section of the canal began in 1812.
