Description

This building consists of a barn, stables, granary, and cartshed located about 10 yards west of Thicknall Farmhouse. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone alterations in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The structure is made of brick and features plain tiled roofs, arranged in an L-plan.

The barn has five bays aligned north to south, with a wagon bay in the second bay from the north end. This bay has opposed cart entries with cambered heads and double doors. There are header ventilation courses and a dentilled eaves cornice. A loft door with a cambered head is located in the south gable end.

To the southeast, there is a stable range that consists of a single-bay wing, which is slightly lower than the barn and has double doors on the north side. Attached to the east end is a two-bay building, also lower in height, featuring a stable door and a window in its north elevation. Next to this is a five-bay range that was originally a shelter shed, supported by bullnosed brick piers with archways that have been blocked, and 20th-century stable doors have been inserted.

At the east end, adjacent to Thicknall Farmhouse, is the granary and cartshed, which has a hipped roof and consists of two bays with two levels. The lower level features square-headed archways at both the north and south ends, with double doors at the road end. The upper granary level has a gabled loft door that is accessed by external brick steps on its east side, along with a lean-to addition on the east side.

This substantial range of farm buildings forms an enclosure around the farmyard of Thicknall Farmhouse to the south and west, with its south elevation facing Thicknall Lane. It is included for its group value.
