Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a Grade I listed building that dates back to the 12th century, with most of its structure from the 14th and 15th centuries. This large sandstone church features an impressive west tower and spire, primarily in the Perpendicular style, which includes a panelled parapet. The church has Perpendicular aisle windows, battlements, pinnacles, and an embattled clerestorey. Inside, there is a four-bay arcade in the Perpendicular style and a carved timber roof in the nave. Notable interior features include fine 13th-century and early 16th-century alabaster monuments located in the north chapel, as well as an alabaster effigy from 1517 in the chancel. The church was restored in 1858. The church is part of a group that includes St John's Court (formerly the Council Offices), the Lych Gate, and No. 14 St John Street.
