Description

The Greyhound and Punchbowl Inn, formerly known as Stow Heath Manor House, is a public house that dates back to the mid-16th century, with possible earlier origins. It was restored in the 1930s. The building features a timber frame set on an ashlar base, with tile roofs and brick stacks. It has two storeys and presents a one-window range with a jettied first floor and gable, along with a projecting gabled wing to the right. The close-studded framing is complemented by later wooden-mullioned windows that have leaded glazing. The first floor includes an oriel window, while the gable above has a boarded opening. The entrance features a Tudor head and a boarded door, with a similar entrance on the return of the wing. Decorative elements include a relief panel of heraldic arms below the first floor window and a greyhound below the window of the wing, along with a punchbowl motif on the gable and heraldic arms on the return of the wing. The left return is similar, showcasing two gables, varied fenestration, and an enriched rainwater head, with a rear stack that has diagonal shafts. Inside, the inn features chamfered beams, a fine Jacobean moulded plaster ceiling, and a carved overmantel above the fireplace in one room, while the rear room boasts a good 16th-century carved overmantel, which may be from a different location.
