Description
The Church of Saint Mary and Saint Margaret is a Grade I listed building located on Chester Road in Castle Bromwich. This 15th-century timber-framed structure was encased in red brick and stone by Thomas White of Worcester between 1726 and 1731. The church features a chancel, nave, aisles, and a west tower, which is adorned with rusticated angle pilasters. The windows are primarily segmental arches with bolection moulded archivolts and keystones, and there are oblong panels above the windows and an oval solid parapet. The tower parapet is decorated with urns at the corners, and the doorways are pedimented with gadrooned window aprons.
Inside, the church boasts Doric arcades, 18th-century box pews, including family pews, and a three-decker pulpit with testers. The wrought iron altar rails, featuring the arms of George II, may have been crafted by Benjamin Taylor. The font is made of Italian marble and dates from 1731. The stained glass includes Flemish pieces depicting martyrs or apostles from 1580-90, as well as English heraldic glass from around 1625.
