Description

Castle Bromwich Hall is a late 16th century or early 17th century building that was remodelled with additions around 1657. It was heightened and altered internally in 1719 and further enlarged by Rickman between 1825 and 1840, which included the addition of a north-east tower wing and passages lining the courtyard. The hall has a hollow square plan with three wings on the south and a staff wing on the north-east. It is constructed of stone-dressed red brick and stands three storeys high, featuring a plinth, floor bands, stone-coped gables with finials, and a central balustraded parapet on the south front. The windows are stone mullioned and transomed leaded casements, primarily in three and four lights. A central two-storey rusticated stone projection on the south side has a first-floor window flanked by arched niches containing statues, created in 1697 by Sir William Wilson, and is topped with a broken segmental pediment supported by four Corinthian columns, with the inner pair having twisted shafts.

Inside, the hall boasts exceptionally fine late 17th century plasterwork by Gouge and ceiling paintings by Laguerre. The internal remodelling was carried out by William Winde between 1685 and 1702. Castle Bromwich Hall, along with its Bakehouse, Stable Block, Pigeon House, East and West Forecourt Walls, and the walls surrounding the garden, as well as the flight of steps and pedestals in the west garden, collectively form a group with the gatepiers to the forecourt of Castle Bromwich Hall on Birmingham Road.
