Description

Lightwoods House is a late 18th century house that was re-fronted in the mid-19th century, located in Lightwoods Park, Smethwick. It is constructed of brick with stucco dressings and features a slate roof. The house has a symmetrical design with two storeys and five bays, characterized by chamfered quoins. The three central bays project and also have chamfered quoins, topped with a pediment.

The ground floor windows are framed with rusticated surrounds and keystones, while the first floor windows, positioned above a cornice, are sashed with segmental heads. These windows are flanked by pilasters with triglyphs above and feature aprons with blind balustrades and segmental pediments adorned with a scallop shell motif. The porch is notable for its rusticated engaged columns, a triglyph frieze, and a balustrade, with a round-headed doorway.

To the left of the main structure is a one-bay pedimented pavilion that remains from the original 18th century building. At the rear, there is a Venetian stair window with Doric columns serving as mullions. Historical records, including the Victoria County History, provide a sketch plan and elevation of the original house, detailing the extent of the 19th century alterations. Additionally, a brick to the east of the porch is inscribed with "Jonathan Grundy, June 19, 1780".
