Description
The Methodist Church, built between 1896 and 1900 by architect Joseph Lancaster Ball and constructed by John Barnsley and Sons, is a notable example of Gothic Freestyle architecture. It is located on Sandon Road in Bearwood and is made of red brick with freestone dressings. The roofs are clad in slate and lead, although the nave and chancel roofs have been replaced with concrete tiles.
The church is aligned on a north-south axis and features a nave and chancel combined into one space, with two aisles, a small northwest tower, a porch, a north vestry, and a gallery at the west end of the nave. The exterior showcases red brick accented with stone bands, lancet clerestory windows set into blind arcades with pilasters, and a large five-light chancel window that has a domestic character. The small northwest tower is adorned with stone bands and a frieze of checkerwork, topped with a tall arcaded stone bell-stage and a short lead-clad spire. The base of the tower includes a gabled porch and a flat-roofed vestry to its left. The west gable end features a tall two-light window flanked by stone buttresses, while the east side boasts a large six-light window with geometric tracery.
Inside, the church has brick walls with stone dressings and four-bay arcades, with a blind arcaded clerestory above. The chancel is plastered and also features stone dressings, including a large six-light east window with an integral traceried reredos, flanked by cusped panels on either side. The east window contains stained glass from 1919, which serves as a memorial, while other stained glass dates from around 1930. The furnishings are intact and include a gallery at the west end, benches, choir stalls, a pulpit, and an organ, along with the original roofs.
