Description
Langley Maltings is a maltings building constructed in 1870. It is made of brick and has slate roofs. The structure consists of two parallel three-storey ranges of malting floors, with six kilns located at the east end, facing Western Road. The west facade overlooks the Titford Canal. Each gable of the two ranges features five bays, which are separated by shallow buttresses with offsets. The windows have segmental heads.
Between the two ranges, there is a four-storey, two-bay kiln, with a blocked canal arm on each side. The gable of the southern range now extends above the roof, which was altered to a design with several shallower pitches after a fire in the 1920s. At the east end, the three northern kilns have steeply pitched pyramid roofs, while the southern kilns have roofs with a shallower pitch. All kilns retain their louvres, except for the northern kiln of the southern range, which is no longer in use.
Inside, the malting floors have been concreted and are supported by three rows of iron columns. Formerly known as Showell's Maltings, the buildings serve as a prominent landmark along the canal.
