Description

The Quarry Bank Peace Memorial and Garden, constructed in the 1920s, stands within Stevens Park and commemorates those lost in the First World War, with a later addition remembering those who died in the Second World War. The memorial garden is accessed via a flight of steps from the west, and is laid out with stone flagged paths and enclosed by a low, stepped stone wall that follows the contours of the ground, with raised sections to the north and south.

The central monument is a tall Portland stone pylon, raised upon three steps and featuring a scotia moulding at the base. Atop the pylon stands a sculpture of Christ, carved by George Wade, which is over life-size and faces west, with arms outstretched in a welcoming gesture. Each face of the pylon is ornamented with a plain Latin cross carved in low relief, with the inscription 'MY PEACE / I GIVE / UNTO YOU' on the front.

Behind the main monument lies a memorial wall, approached via a low rake of three steps. The wall rises in three stages, each slightly projecting from the previous one. The far left section bears the inscription 'HE HATH MADE OF / ONE BLOOD ALL NATIONS', and the far right section mirrors this with 'I SAW A NEW HEAVEN / AND A NEW EARTH'. Across the main sections of the wall, a bronze inscription reads: 'TO THE IMMORTAL HONOUR OF THE MEN OF QUARRY BANK WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / THIS MEMORIAL IS DEDICATED IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL RECOGNITION BY THE RESIDENTS OF QUARRY BANK.' Metal plaques below this dedication list the commemorated names. Above the central section is a wreath carved in relief, encircling 'IN / MEMORIAM', with the words 'THEIR NAME / LIVETH FOR EVERMORE' below. Carved in relief on the flanking sections are the dates 1914 and 1918.

A later memorial wall, situated to the right, also rises from the garden wall with a single step to the front. This wall bears the inscription 'TO THE IMMORTAL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF QUARRY BANK / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1939 – 1945', rendered in applied bronze letters. Five plaques below record the commemorated names, with a small metal strip below the central plaque providing the most recent name.
