Description
RAVENHURST STREET 1. Highgate B17 5104 Nos 35 to 38 (consec) (The Lodge) and Lench's Trust Almshouses (Nos 1 to 36 (consec)) (formerly listed as Nos 35 to 38 (consec) Lenches Trust Almshouses and Lodge) under Camp Hill)
SP 0885 NWt 53/14 18.3.76 II 2. Dated 1849, an almshouse close of red brick with atone dressings, in a Jacobean style. Designed by J H Hornblower and Haylock - similar to the same architects almshouses in Ladywood. To the street a symmetrical composition of central matron's lodge and flanking walls linking with gable ends of 2 wings stretching back south to form close. Doorways in flanking wall either side of matron's lodge. The latter is of 2 storeys and attic with ogee shaped gable. Gabled ends of wings richly decorated with tripartite panels containing inscription, surmounted by chimney stacks. Matron's lodge has 3-light mullioned window with drip mould, to ground floor. Moulded capping to flanking screen walls carried over gable ends of wings as stringcourse. Within the close, the wings present 3 bay elevations to the central lawn with the south closed by a pair with centre break. Each 3 bay elevation contains 3 almshouse units. Two storeys red brick. Tiled roofs with eaves cornice; cresting tiled and stepped chimney stacks on ridges. Two light small toned casement windows. Entrances to internal porches have 4-centred arches with drip moulds. The close elevation of the matron's lodge has a 2 storey canted bay with small parted casement lights and 3-light attic casement with drip mould surmounted by shaped gable.
