Description
No. 136 Linden Road is a building dating from around 1897, designed by W Alexander Harvey and altered since its construction. It features two gabled blocks positioned at right angles to the road, with a cross wing at the back. The left-hand block is two storeys high, while the right-hand block has two storeys plus an attic, with the upper storeys jettied. The ground floor is constructed of red brick, while the upper storeys display timber-framing with roughcast infill, and the right side includes some tile hanging. The roofs are tiled.
In the left-hand block, there is an asymmetrically placed three-light window on the ground floor, with a central five-light window above. Both windows are wooden casements with glazing bars. A modern shopfront connects this block to the one on the right. The first floor features a canted bay window with sidelights and a dentilled cornice supported by corbels adorned with grotesques carved by Benjamin Creswick. In the gable, there is a four-light casement window, both with leaded lights. The entrance is located on the right-hand return of the left block, where two chimney stacks rise directly from the ground through the cross-gables.
