Description

The Bournville Memorial Cross stands in the green where Sycamore Road, Laburnum Road, and Willow Road meet. It is set on a small lawn enclosed by a low, octagonal hedge with openings on the north and south sides for access.

The memorial is a tall structure made of Weldon stone, taking the form of a lantern cross. A small stone sphere sits atop the four-sided lantern, which is decorated with intricate blind Gothic arches on each face. The lantern rises from a narrow, tapering, octagonal shaft, which in turn stands on an octagonal plinth and a two-stepped, octagonal base. A principal inscription, “REMEMBER/ 1914-1919,” is carved in relief on one face of the plinth, while commemorated names are incised into three other faces of the plinth. Group value is conferred by the memorial's contribution to the setting of Bournville.
