Description

31-33 Ludgate Hill is a late 19th-century building that originally served as workshops and a warehouse, now functioning as offices and workshops. It features buff-coloured brick with moulded brick decoration and is topped with a Welsh slate roof. The structure has a stepped design that runs parallel to the street, providing covered vehicle access to a rear yard.

The exterior consists of an 11-bay, three-storey facade above basements, designed to follow the slope of the street. Nos. 32 and 33 form the lower, six-bay section, while No. 31 is the upper five-bay section on the right. Nos. 32 and 33 have semi-circular arch-headed doorways at bays 1 and 6, with curved heads above the overlights. Between these doorways are four 2 over 2 pane sash windows set within semi-circular arch-headed openings. Above these, there is a moulded cill band and six first-floor sashes that match the ground floor openings but feature linked hood moulds. The upper floor has smaller 4-pane sashes rising from the cill band and set beneath shallow segmental brick arches.

No. 31 has a tall semi-circular arch-headed vehicle entry on the left, with boarded double doors, and an entrance doorway to the right. Between these, there is a pair of 2 over 2 pane sashes that match the corresponding openings in Nos. 32 and 33. The building features a moulded eaves band with paired brackets, and both sections have storeyed ranges at the rear.

31-33 Ludgate Hill is part of a significant group of buildings that help define the approach to the formally-planned square surrounding St Paul’s Church and churchyard, and it is located within a specialist manufacturing quarter that is now recognized for its international significance.
