Description
St Clears is a house of 1914, built in the Arts and Crafts style for J E By and designed by W H Bidlake. The house is constructed of purple brick with accents of red brick, yellow stone, and tile hanging, topped with a tiled roof. It is two storeys high with an attic, arranged with three gabled bays, the two outer bays projecting forward. The front facade, facing Farquhar Road, presents a formal character distinct from the more relaxed design of the garden front. The ground floor features a four-light transomed window, a narrow three-light window, a doorway within a simple moulded surround, and another three-light transomed window. The first floor has a three-light window, two cross-windows arranged within an arcade featuring polychromatic brick tympana, a small two-light window, and a further three-light window. Most of the windows have leaded lights, with particularly elaborate detailing in the central bay. The central gable contains two two-light casements with leaded lights set between bands of tilework. Inside, a staircase leads to a groin-vaulted bedroom passage.
