Description

Parkview House is a Grade II listed building located on Alcester Street in Highgate, built between 1903 and 1904 as a large Rowton House hostel. This impressive structure is notable for its massive quadriangular form, constructed from bright red quality brick, and features five storeys, a basement, and attics. The long, narrow windowed elevation is enhanced by shallow breaks, broad gables, and triangular ribs that rise from the second-floor sill course. The substantial appearance of the building is complemented by buff terracotta dressings and finials.

Distinctive octagonal corner towers, which are slightly stepped at each stage, are topped with copper-sheathed conical roofs. The gables showcase decorative terracotta work, and terracotta dragons with shields serve as gargoyles at the top of the towers. The gabled porch is entirely faced with terracotta and is flanked by octagonal turrets capped with cupolas. At the center of the porch, a finely modeled figure of a boy, likely carrying a light fitting on his back, serves as a finial. The spandrels of the door arch feature delicately wrought relief panels depicting boys that represent themes of industry and rural poverty or farming life. The property is further enhanced by tall cast iron railings around the area and is situated on a commanding hillside site.
