Description
No 112 on Moseley Street is a police barracks built around 1880, originally designed as a hostel. This large three-storey building with an attic showcases the Birmingham Gothic style, associated with architects Martin and Chamberlain. It is constructed of red brick with terracotta dressings and features a slightly asymmetrical arrangement of bays, highlighted by three prominent gables that have corbelled and ribbed tall brick chimney shafts. The gables are adorned with cut brickwork and terracotta panels. The windows include coupled and single pointed arches with roll-edged reveals and drip moulds. The first-floor windows have blind tympana set within terracotta panels featuring decorative roundels. There are also sash windows with leaded and stained glass in the top lights. The building has a large segmental arched entrance to the courtyard, which includes double panelled doors. Notably, this site was the first residence of Cardinal Newman in the city.
