Description

The Public Library on Spring Hill, built in 1893 by Martin and Chamberlain, is a small but richly designed example of Gothic style architecture located at a corner site with Icknield Street. It features bright red brick complemented by the partnership's characteristic terracotta dressings and decoration. A prominent clock tower with a pinnacle clasped spire is situated above the entrance. The steep gable end roof is tiled and adorned with cresting tiles. The building has finialed gabled window bays that contain lofty paired lancets with ogee arched and pointed lights, along with decorative terracotta panels between the floors. The south front includes a triple group of windows with a taller gabled centre light, topped by a pyramid roof at the west end. Inside, the library is galleried with balconies supported by marble columns, and features a pointed barrel vault over the open two-storey space.
