Description

The George and Dragon Public House is a public house located at the corner of Albion Street, Pope Street, and Carver Street in Hockley. The building features a five-bay elevation facing Albion Street, with the corner on Pope Street likely dating back to around 1820. The remainder of the front was added or rebuilt around 1860 to 1870, coinciding with changes to the windows and refurbishment of the ground floor.

The structure is three storeys tall, constructed of red brick, and has a bowed stucco panel at the Carver Street corner. It has a hipped slate roof with paired cut brackets at the eaves. The ground floor showcases a pub front with windows and doorways framed by banded shafts topped with large crocketed capitals. The doors are panelled with painted glass, and the windows feature leaded glazing with colonette mullions. An entablature curves up over circular overdoors.

On the upper floors, the two bays on the west and Pope Street return have revealed marginal glazed sashes, while the three bays on the east include sashes from around 1870 flanking a revealed oriel bay window, which has shafting and details similar to the pub front. There is a similar oriel window on the Carver Street return, which also has a one-storey extension designed by James and Lister Lea from 1922.
