Description

This building, located at 1-4 Hampton Street, is a Grade II listed corner block of shops and workshops dating from around 1880. It features housing and workshops above the commercial spaces. The structure rises four storeys at the corner, with the main side ranges extending three storeys and including attics. It is constructed from red brick, accented with stone, cut brick, ceramic bricks, and decorative polychrome tiles. The corner showcases elements of Ruskinian Gothic architecture, which relates to the nearby terrace on Constitution Hill, while the side ranges exhibit typical Birmingham Gothic detailing.

The corner shop front is painted white and features broad articulating piers. The adjacent shop fronts and workshop entrances on both sides are adorned with panelled pilasters, elongated acanthus consoles, and bracketed cornices. The upper storeys contain single and coupled jointed windows, each with leaf-carved impost strings. Decorative gables with roundels punctuate the cut brick eaves. Notably, the corner includes a three-tiered wooden oriel window, ornately decorated with quatrefoil top lights for the casements and a panelled superstructure, topped with a deep cornice that breaks through the eaves. This building occupies an important corner site.
