Description

Guy's Cliffe House is a house built around 1751-1757, with significant additions made between 1813 and 1824, and a small addition in 1898. The later changes have largely obscured the exterior of the original 18th-century house, except for the south front facing the courtyard, which is made of ashlar, has two storeys and a semi-basement, and features seven bays with windows in moulded architraves. The central porch has a large platform that keeps the rusticated basement visible.

Between 1813 and 1824, the north and west sides of the earlier house underwent considerable alterations. The north front, facing the river, was raised in height, and two projecting bay windows were transformed into tower-like features with ogee-headed gables between them. The west front received a central turret flanked by ogee-headed gables. After 1819, an arcaded verandah was added to the west front, and the west wing was extended at both ends. Additions on the east side included a kitchen wing in Gothic style, which connects the house to the chapel.

In 1898, a four-storey polygonal tower was added to the courtyard side of the west wing. The interior of the house was stripped in 1952, and by 1966, the roof had collapsed. The building is now in an advanced state of decay, except for the Gothic kitchen wing, which is currently used by the Masons as a dining room. The house has historical associations with notable figures such as Sarah Siddons and John Ruskin. To the south of the house, there is a range of stables built into the rock face, featuring an arcaded ashlar front.
