Description
The Church of Saint James is a parish church that was rebuilt in 1879-80 in the Decorated style, designed by John Gibson and funded by Lord Charles Bertie Percy. The exterior walls are made of rock-faced sandstone, except for the ashlar tower, while the interior features ashlar as well. The church has pitched plain tile roofs and includes a chancel, a north organ chamber, a north vestry, a north aisle, a south porch, and a west tower. The windows and doorways are designed in a late 13th-century style, with most windows featuring two trefoiled lights, except for the east window of the chancel, which has three lights, and there are lancets in the lower stage of the tower. The structure is buttressed and has a gabled wooden south porch. The tower consists of three stages, with blank arcading of four pointed arches on each face of the second stage, topped by a low wooden stage and a pyramidal tiled roof. The north arcade features three pointed arches.
