Description

This is a large, circa 17th century timber-framed building, originally a range of three dwellings, with substantial early 19th century additions to the rear. The original 17th century portion is a one-storey and attic, six-bay range, three bays with gables and one featuring a later gabled porch. The timber frame has brick infill panels and a stone plinth, topped by a steeply pitched plain tile roof with gabled ends. All six gables have ornate 19th century bargeboards. The front has two three-light and two four-light casement windows on the ground floor, along with an oriel bay window; the first floor mirrors this layout, with two three-light and two four-light casements, all featuring leading. The gabled porch has ornate timber framing incorporating herringbone patterns and circular motifs, and an arched entrance with relief carvings in the spandrels and musicians depicted in the side panels. Below is a balustrade with turned balusters, set on a riser of linen-fold panelling. There are two brick ridge chimney stacks, each with four square shafts. Attached to the rear of No 8 and at a right angle is an early 19th century brick, two-storey, three-bay house. Attached to the rear of Nos 10 and 12 is a large early 19th century brick house, which was enlarged in 1871. By 1905, a single-storey addition had been built to the east of the 17th century portion, set back 1.2 metres behind the front wall of the earlier part of No 12. A single-storey fronting the road, in line with the front wall of the 17th century portion, consists of a balustrade and lych gate under a tiled roof.
