SP3166SW CLARENDON SQUARE 1208-1/1/120 (West side) 25/03/70 2 pairs of gate piers to north and south of drive to Nos 11-21 (consecutive)

4 gate piers. c1832 with later alterations to pair to south. Reddish-brown brick with stucco facades, painted to south and with cast-iron gryphons to north. Square on plan, approximately 1 metre x 2 metres high. Chamfered plinth. Shaft has chamfered angles with run-out stops to upper stage. Piers to south have incised anthemion motif. Stepped cornice surmounted by 2-stepped blocking course, supporting gryphons holding ball to north. (Roth D: Early C19 Decorative Ironwork: a study based on Leamington Spa: 1976-: 67, FIG.91).
