Description

Bushwood Hall is a house dating from around the 17th century, with a front section rebuilt in 1708 and alterations made in the early 19th century. It stands on an earlier moated site. The front range is of stuccoed brick, while the rear wing is timber-framed. The house has steeply pitched plain tile roofs with gabled ends. The front (west) elevation has three gables, the central one slightly projecting, and is two storeys high with a three-window facade. A set of three steps leads to the central four-centred arched doorway, which has a plank door and hood-mould. To the left and right of the doorway are six-light mullion and transom windows with leaded panes. On the first floor, the central window is a two-light mullioned casement, and the left and right windows are three-light mullioned casements, all with leaded panes; the central window also has a hood mould. A twin shafted brick chimney stack is located at the north gable. The earlier portions of the house are slightly lower and consist of a parallel range with a wing set at right angles. Robert Catesby, a key figure in the Gunpowder Plot, was born at Bushwood Hall in 1573; he was a descendant of William Catesby, a favourite of Richard III.
